Professor Ray Guillery FRS (1929-2017)

We are sorry to announce the death of Emeritus Fellow Professor Ray Guillery FRS (born 28 August 1929). Professor Guillery was a distinguished neurophysiologist and neuroanatomist, who was appointed Dr Lee’s Chair in Human Anatomy in 1984.
David Paterson, head of the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, has said of his scientific legacy:
As a pioneering electron microscopist, he described the synaptic organization of the lateral geniculate nucleus that underpinned his discovery of developmental abnormalities in the visual system of albino animals. A world leader in thalamo-cortical communication, and founding Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Neuroscience, he was also a passionate advocate for graduate education in neuroscience.
