Alumni FAQs

We often get asked questions about graduation ceremonies or the award of MA degrees, so we’ve put this page together to answer some of these queries.

If there’s something you’d like to know which we haven’t covered here, please do get in touch.

How do I join the Hertford alumni community?

Once you’ve graduated from Hertford you’ll automatically join our community of worldwide Hertford alumni. Not hearing from us? Make sure we have your latest contact details.

Can I visit college?

We are always happy to see our alumni and their friends and families at Hertford. If you are planning a visit, we recommend contacting the Development Office in the first instance to check if there are any closures or events you may need to be aware of. If it is during normal working hours, one of the Development Team will be happy to meet you and give you a tour of the college. On weekends or public holidays, you will be able to visit public parts of the college only (ie OB Quad and the Chapel). Please be aware that there may be occasions when it is not possible to admit visitors.

How do I apply for a graduation ceremony?

Graduation ceremonies are organised by the Academic Office. Take a look at our Graduation page to find details of forthcoming degree days and the application process.

How do I apply for an Oxford MA degree?

Visit our Graduation page for more information on MA degree conferals. To be eligible, you need to have completed your BA or BFA 21 terms (or more) since you matriculated – that’s seven years after starting your degree. It isn’t an automatic process, so you must apply to graduate at a degree ceremony (either in person or in absentia).

How do I verify my qualifications or get a replacement certificate?

These can be obtained from the University’s Degree Conferrals Office.

Is it possible to remain a member of the Bodleian Library?

Oxford alumni can register as a Bodleian Libraries member for free; this provides access to the Bodleian Libraries on a reference basis and access to Oxford’s full e-resource collections when in one of the Bodleian Libraries (as well as some e-resources remotely).

Can I get career advice?

Yes, the University’s Careers Service is available to alumni for life. Visit their website for further information.

How do I get an Oxford alumni card?

The University’s central alumni office provide these cards upon request; please visit their website to request one. The Oxford alumni card identifies you as a member of the University’s body of alumni, and we ask that you bring it along when visiting Hertford.

Can I keep my Oxford email address?

Unfortunately, you cannot keep your Oxford email address, and we suggest that you ensure you change your email address for important contacts once you finish your time with us. The University email forwarding service is currently under review by the central IT team. For the current time, no new emails are being created under the system.

I’d love to hold an event or my wedding at Hertford – can I?

Our weekends can get very booked up with alumni events and conferences, but we can sometimes arrange private dinners or weddings out of term-time. To find out more, visit our Event Bookings page or contact our Events Coordinator: events@hertford.ox.ac.uk. For more information about arranging special event in Chapel, such as weddings, please contact the Chaplain and read the information on the Chapel Services page.
