Daniel Dennett, Hertford Alumnus and Philosopher (1942 – 2024)
24 April 2024
Daniel Dennett, Hertford alumnus and renowned philosopher, has died at the age of 82. Dennett came up to Oxford in 1963 to start a DPhil under Gilbert Ryle, having previously finished an undergraduate degree in philosophy at Harvard. He dedicated his subsequent career to philosophy of the mind, with a particular focus on cognitive studies. He claimed that his overall philosophical project remained largely the same from his time at Oxford onwards.
After Hertford, Dennett took up a post at UC Irvine, followed by a decades-long career at Tufts University, where he stayed on as Emeritus Professor after his retirement.
