New podcast featuring Prof. Alison Woollard
23 January 2020
What’s the science behind ageing? What determines the life expectancy of a species? Can we stop ageing?
Join Biochemistry Fellow, Prof. Alison Woollard, in the Big Questions Podcast from Oxford Sparks. Ancient civilizations supposedly sought an ‘elixir of life’ and today many of us get hung up on finding a way to ‘younger-looking skin’, but just how many of us understand the science behind the statements? The Big Questions Podcast goes behind the scenes in Alison’s lab to discover the work of her research team and provide an answer to the big question itself.
In the Biochemistry Department, Alison leads a research team working on the genetics of the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans. Her current work concerns molecular mechanisms of cell fate determination and morphogenesis during C. elegans development, as well as research on mechanisms of biological ageing. She is Oxford University’s Academic Champion for Public Engagement with Research, presented the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures in 2013, and appeared on BBC Radio 4’s The Life Scientific in 2017. Later this year, she will return as the judge of Hertford College’s Unsung Heroes of Science competition – watch this space!
