Congratulations to Lord Hague of Richmond!
20 February 2025
We are thrilled to congratulate Lord Hague of Richmond, Hertford’s visitor, on his official installation as the 160th Chancellor of the University of Oxford. In the Sheldonian Theatre yesterday, Lord Hague was formally welcomed into the role after his successful election in November 2024.
During his inaugural address, Lord Hague expressed heartfelt gratitude for the warm welcome he has received:
“I thank all of you, the Convocation, for electing me as your Chancellor and for your enthusiastic welcome in recent weeks. Every visit I have made so far and every conversation has deepened my excitement about the years to come. I happily dedicate myself today to working with you and for you.”
Lord Hague also addressed several contemporary challenges, expressing concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence, youth anxiety, and loneliness. He underscored the growing need for fostering meaningful, in-person interactions over the increasing reliance on digital distractions. In his view, the University of Oxford plays a crucial role in helping to combat these societal issues. By promoting human connection, critical thinking, and real-world engagement, Lord Hague emphasized that Oxford should be at the forefront of shaping solutions for the well-being of future generations.
Professor Irene Tracey Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, warmly welcomed Lord Hague with high praise for his character and vision:
“I am delighted and honoured to welcome Lord Hague back to Oxford as our new Chancellor. His deep connection to the University and his commitment to its values, mission, and vision will serve this world-class institution well during his tenure. He is a man of considerable integrity, wisdom, and dedication. I look forward to working closely with him in the years ahead as we uphold and strengthen Oxford’s legacy of excellence.”
Lord Hague’s vision and leadership will undoubtedly enhance Oxford’s proud tradition of excellence, and we eagerly look forward to his contributions in shaping the University’s future. Congratulations again to Lord Hague of Richmond on this well-deserved appointment!
