Hilary Term Sports Roundup
28 March 2025
As Hilary term has come to a close, we celebrate another fantastic season of sport at Hertford. From nail-biting finishes to historic victories, our athletes have once again showcased their talent, determination, and team spirit. Here’s a look back at some of the most memorable moments from the term.
A Cuppers Legacy in Football
The Hertble (Hertford and Keble) Women’s Football Team cemented their dominance by winning the Cuppers final 4-2 against Wertonfield (Wadham, Merton, Mansfield), marking their second consecutive Cuppers win. Their incredible performance throughout the competition highlights their skill and teamwork.
In men’s football, Hertford played an exhilarating 9-7 match against alumni, securing an impressive victory. Meanwhile, the men’s team also faced a tight 5-4 loss against Hughdem (St Hugh’s, Wadham), proving their competitive edge in an intense showdown.
Our Netball Teams Top the League
Congratulations to our netball players! Our women’s team topped the Hilary league, and our mixed team came second in the first division.
Rowing: A Historic Torpids Campaign
This year’s Torpids will go down in Hertford history! Both the Men’s First Boat (M1) and the Women’s First Boat (W1) achieved Blades for the first time ever—a landmark achievement for the college.
- M1 started at the bottom of Division 1 and fought their way up, bumping St Catz, Wadham, Balliol, and New to secure their historic victory.
- W1, beginning near the top of Division 2, showcased resilience and power, bumping Teddy, LMH, Trinity, and Magdalen to earn promotion to Division 1.
Netball and Ultimate Frisbee: Hard-Fought Battles
Hertford’s netball teams had a competitive term, with the women’s team drawing 11-11 against Balliol, while the mixed team secured a tight 3-2 win against Christchurch. Despite being a player down, the mixed team fought valiantly in a 5-4 loss to Catz, proving their determination on the court.
In Ultimate Frisbee, Hertford dominated with a 12-8 victory over Balliol and an even more decisive 13-1 win against Five Seas (Christchurch, Corpus, Catz). The team’s agility and strategy continue to make them a force to be reckoned with.
Varsity Triumphs and Individual Standouts
Beyond college competitions, several Hertford athletes shone on the Rugby Varsity stage:
- Joe Dingle captained the Whippets to a dominant 50-12 Varsity victory.
- Ella Gallagher’s team also delivered a commanding 26-5 win.
- Lilla Berry and Lucy McBride both represented the Blues in Varsity matches—and both emerged victorious!
In Boxing Varsity we had two wins, Alice Ledzion and Joe Bruton both took home a victory in the Oxford town hall. Tassilo von Mueller has been selected to represent Oxford in the upcoming Boat Race.
Hertford also celebrated Annabel Hedge’s silver medal in the BUCS 800m, a testament to her dedication and speed on the track.
Looking Ahead
From the football pitch to the river, the netball court to the running track, Hertford athletes have once again demonstrated their passion and perseverance. Congratulations to all teams and individuals who contributed to this outstanding term of sport. As we look forward to the next season, one thing is clear—Hertford’s sporting legacy continues to grow stronger!
