10th Oku Memorial Rugby Tournament
20 December 2014
The 10th annual Oku Memorial Rugby Tournament took place on Saturday December 13th at Iffley Road Oxford. For the third successive year Hertford College fielded a joint XV with Vincent’s Club to contest the Oku Trophy, and defeated London Japanese 24-10 before losing to eventual winners the Kew Occasionals 47-10.
Ambassador Katsuhiko Oku (Hertford 1981-83) was the first Japanese national to represent the Blues XV at Oxford and become a member of Vincent’s Club. He was killed on diplomatic duty working on the UN post-war reconstruction programme in Iraq in November 2003. After the games at Iffley Road, a new portrait of Ambassador Oku donated by the participants in the event was unveiled in Vincent’s Club.
