The event was held at the Paranal Observatory in Chile, and was attended by the President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet and other dignitaries. This event marks the start of construction of the world’s largest and most powerful optical/infrared telescope. The ELT will take 7 years to construct and is scheduled for its first look at the sky in 2024.
