Meet our five new fellows
3 August 2020
We are delighted to announce the appointment of five new tutorial fellows, enriching our teaching and research across all four of the University’s academic divisions.
Joining us in the new academic year are Prof. Dawid Kielak, Dr Lambros Malafouris, Dr Federica Romei, Dr Carissa Véliz and Dr Vladyslav Vyazovskiy. Find out more about their research interests in the profiles below.
Professor Dawid Kielak
Tutorial Fellow in Pure Mathematics & Associate Professor of Pure Mathematics and its Interfaces
Having completed his undergraduate and doctoral degrees here in Oxford, Dawid went on to the universities of Warsaw, Bonn and Bielefeld before returning to the UK. As a group theorist, his research focuses on the symmetries (and symmetries of symmetries!) of various objects. His current work is funded by the ERC Starting Grant 2019 ‘Fibring’ and focuses on understanding high-dimensional spaces by viewing them as spaces of one dimension less evolving in time. At Hertford, Dawid will take care of our pure mathematics teaching.
Dr Lambros Malafouris
Tutorial Fellow in Archaeology and Anthropology & Associate Professor in Cognitive Archaeology
For the last ten years, Lambros has been a Fellow in Creativity, Cognition and Material Culture at Keble College and Oxford’s Institute of Archaeology. He completed his doctorate and previously worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge. Lambros’ cross-disciplinary research interests lie in the archaeology of mind, the anthropology of creative material engagement, and the philosophy and semiotics of materiality. He is interested in the study of the interaction between cognition and material culture and is currently principal investigator of HANDMADE: Understanding Creative Gesture in Pottery Making, an anthropological study of the process of making by hand funded through a European Research Council Consolidator Grant. Lambros will teach our Archaeology and Anthropology undergraduates at Hertford and teaches a module on cognitive archaeology on the MSc Archaeology programme.
Dr Federica Romei
Tutorial Fellow in Economics & Associate Professor in Economics
Federica joins Hertford having held positions across Europe, first as a Fellow at the European University Institute and subsequently at the Stockholm School of Economics. In 2016, she became a Research Affiliate at the Center for Economic Policy Research and between 2017 and 2018 was a Visiting Scholar at the Banco de España. Federica researches international economics, with a focus on monetary and prudential policy in relation to central banks, individual countries and monetary unions. At Hertford, Federica will teach undergraduates macroeconomics.
Dr Carissa Véliz
Tutorial Fellow in Philosophy & Associate Professor in Philosophy
Carissa has significant experience in Oxford, where she completed her DPhil and has since worked as a Research Fellow for the Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics and the Wellcome Centre for Ethics and Humanities. Carissa’s research focuses on the ethics of technology, moral and political philosophy more generally, and public policy. She is the author of several forthcoming books on the subject – Privacy Is Power (Transworld) and The Ethics of Privacy (Oxford University Press), as well as the editor of the Oxford Handbook of Digital Ethics (forthcoming). Carissa will teach moral philosophy, ethics and philosophy of mind, and AI ethics to Hertford students.
Dr Vladyslav Vyazovskiy
Tutorial Fellow in Medicine & Associate Professor in Neuroscience
Starting his education in Ukraine, Vlad earned his PhD at the University of Zurich and was a postdoctoral researcher and Associate Scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After teaching at the University of Surrey, Vlad came to Oxford in 2013, where he has been a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Anatomy, Physiology & Genetics. His group is a part of the Sleep & Circadian Neuroscience Institute, and his research focuses on sleep and its role in neurodegenerative disorders, mental health, ageing and metabolism. At Hertford, Vlad will teach our pre-clinical medics topics on physiology, pharmacology and neuroscience. He also teaches on the Biomedical Sciences course, the Wellcome Trust Doctoral Training Programme in Neuroscience, and the Online Programme in Sleep Medicine, and supervises DPhil students.
