Bursaries
Hertford College provides a bursary of ÂŁ1,500 a year to all UK undergraduates studying for a first degree who are assessed by their regional funding agency as having a household income of less that ÂŁ63,000. This bursary, which was founded by the JCR in 2010, is one of the most generous college bursary schemes in the University. Each year, around 140 students benefit from the Hertford bursary – roughly 25% of the college’s undergraduate students.
We have a number of bursaries to support students in specific areas, including the Clifford Chance Bursary for students studying Computer Science, and the Ferrar Bursary for students studying Maths. Equally, many donors fund bursaries without subject limitation.
If you would like to name a bursary or direct your support to a specific subject, please get in touch with the Development Office and we can help you with all the details.

Hardship funds
Students who experience unexpected financial hardship during their time at Hertford as a result of emergency circumstances may apply for a Hardship Grant. Often this is due to a change in family cirsumstances, for example a parent falling ill or losing their job, or a student who usually self-funds by working in the holidays who needs to spend the vacation preparing for exams. These figures are rising, particularly given recent cuts to undergraduate maintenance grants and the paucity of graduate scholarships. Grants are available to UK, EU and overseas undergraduates and graduates and are awarded on a termly basis on the recommendation of the Student Support Sub-Committee. The award can be up to £500 per term. Hertford gives roughly £30,000 a year in Hardship Grants.
Hertford welcomes all sorts of people who might not otherwise consider Oxford. But it is an expensive place to live. Your loan can disappear very quickly just on everyday living. Without this support, I’d never have been able to afford to live in Oxford
