Information for applicants

Thank you to everyone who has applied for an undergraduate course at the University of Oxford. We hope to be able to make the admissions process enjoyable and easy to navigate!

We encourage applicants to check this page regularly for updates and to read more about our technology recommendations and what to expect in your subject. If you have any questions or concerns about your application please email our Admissions Office, who will be happy to help: undergraduate.admissions@hertford.ox.ac.uk.

We contact all of our candidates once we have begun assessing your UCAS applications, and we also contact you to let you know whether or not you have been shortlisted for interview. Do take your time to familiarise yourself with the course page relevant to your application, and with its listed requirements – we may also reach out to request things like written work, and it is hugely helpful to us if you are prepared to send these over promptly!

Shortlisting

Oxford receives over 20,000 applications for around 3,300 places every year and carries out around 10,000 interviews. With so many more applications than places it just isn’t possible to interview everyone. Tutors shortlist the candidates they feel have the strongest potential and meet their selection criteria best. Only those shortlisted are invited to interview.

We will email you to let you know if you have been invited to interview. Applicants for different subjects may find out whether they have been shortlisted on different dates, but you should hear at least a week before your interview is due to take place. Please see the University’s interview timetable for details of when interviews will be scheduled in different subjects.

Online interviews

Since 2020, all admissions interviews are held online using Microsoft Teams. We recommend that you prepare just as you would if the meeting was going to be face to face. You may be invited to more than one interview at more than one college. For each interview you will be sent a separate Microsoft Teams calendar invitation. When you click the link in this invitation, you will enter a virtual interview lobby and interviewers will then ‘admit’ you to your interview. Your emailed invitation will also include all the other information you need to be aware of in advance of your interview. Please see our Online Interview Technology page for more details about the set-up you will need to participate.

How to get in touch

We encourage you to get in touch if you have any questions or worries. If you have any questions about the application process, please write to Hertford’s Admissions Officer, Alfie Deere-Hall. Likewise, please contact Alfie if you encounter any problems with your interview (technical or otherwise) – you should not contact the tutors directly.

Please email undergraduate.admissions@hertford.ox.ac.uk and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
