Terry Hughes
Remembering Terry Hughes
Terry Hughes played a huge role at Hertford, both in his time as a student and in more recent years as a powerhouse behind the college’s development plans.
Having studied Physics as an undergraduate, Terry was tutored by another Hertford stalwart, Neil Tanner. Terry and Neil both held dear the importance of encouraging applicants from schools and regions traditionally under-represented at Oxford, and after graduation Terry kept in touch with Neil, sharing his enthusiasm for the college’s outreach and access projects.
Terry was also a keen rower, and galvanised Hertford College Boat Club to extend their ambition and commit to professional coaching and support for rowers. With Terry’s help, the boat club invested in equipment and instigated financial assistance for club members who otherwise would have needed to take jobs in university holidays and forgo their place in the team.
Terry’s friends from his student days remember fondly his time as JCR Treasurer, when he charmed Fellows and students alike, entertaining them in his rooms above the college bar. In tribute to Terry, his old room will be named after him and a plaque installed to remember him. The boat club will also name their annual AGM dinner, when current and past members gather together for a meal in Hall, in Terry’s memory.
Together with Terry’s family and friends, Hertford will also be establishing an endowment in Terry’s name. The fund will provide bursaries and financial assistance for students in need, and will also continue Terry’s support of the boat club.
