Next Steps Essex

In collaboration with Emmanuel College, Cambridge, our Next Steps Essex programme introduces Year 12 students to Oxbridge and equips them with the information they need to make their next steps.

The programme consists of three virtual webinars, spread across the first half of Year 12, which introduce Oxford and Cambridge, including what makes them distinctive, what courses they offer and what the application process involves. Students will hear from outreach staff from Hertford and Emmanuel and will get the opportunity to take part in Q&As with some of our current undergraduates.

2022-23 dates

In this academic year, the webinars will take place from 5:00pm to 6:30pm on the following dates:

  • Weds 18th January – Year 12 – Introduction to Oxbridge
  • Weds 1st February – Year 11 – Introduction to Oxbridge
  • Weds 1st March – Year 11 & 12 – Critical Thinking – Study skills and Oxbridge applications
  • Weds 8th March – Year 12 – Personal statements
  • September 2023 (date TBC) – Year 13 – Oxbridge interview workshop

Who is eligible to take part?

All students from non-selective state schools in the local authorities of Essex, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock are eligible to take part.

Students attending selective grammar or independent schools are eligible if they meet one of our widening participation criteria, which include those in care or who are care leavers; those eligible for Free School Meals (or who have been eligible in the last six years); those from BAME backgrounds; those living in areas under-represented in higher education (POLAR 4 Quintiles 1 or 2); estranged students; young carers; and those who would be the first generation of their family to progress to higher education. If you feel that you meet one or more of these criteria, please email slo@emma.cam.ac.uk to find out more about completing the registration process.

Next Steps Essex is accepting sign-ups until 23:59 on Tuesday 20th December 2022. You can register using this form:
