Graduate scholarships

Graduate Scholarship Offer, Entry 2027–2028

Hertford has scholarships available to enable graduate students to study at Oxford.

Our scholarships are made in partnership with the University departments and do not require a separate college-specific application.

The applications of all eligible candidates will automatically be considered on the basis of the University application form for graduate study,

You are welcome, but not required, to name Hertford College as your preferred college on your graduate application form.

If you are offered one of Hertford scholarships, you will also be offered a place at Hertford College in order to take up the award.

Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact the college’s fellows in the relevant subject to discuss their application and research interests.

One Hertford College Mortimer-May Graduate Scholarship in Geography

  • Eligibility: Home/Overseas applicants for the DPhil in Geography, with preference given to candidates whose area of study overlaps with the broadly defined academic interests of the college’s Geography fellows.
  • Value: The college pays half of the costs of a DPhil (stipend and fees) and a modest fieldwork allowance. The department covers the other half of the cost.
  • Duration: Period of fee liability.
  • Application: Via University application form for graduate study by the stated application deadline.

One Hertford College Peter Howard Scholarship in Physics in partnership with the Clarendon Fund

  • Eligibility: Home/Overseas applicants for the DPhil in Physics, with preference for applicants in Theoretical Physics or Astrophysics.
  • Value: Course fee and a grant for living expenses.
  • Duration: Period of fee liability.
  • Application: Via University application form for graduate study by the stated application deadline.

Senior Scholarship Offer, Entry 2027–2028

Hertford offers Senior Scholarships to current doctoral students whose funding is at an end but who need additional time to complete their studies in Oxford.

Applications for Senior Scholarships are made directly to the college. Please see below for details on how to apply for specific awards.

If you are offered a Hertford Senior Scholarship, you will be required to migrate to Hertford College in order to take up the award.

Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact the college’s fellows in the relevant subject to discuss their application and research interests.

One Alain Locke Studentship

  • Eligibility: current Rhodes Scholars whose funding is at an end but who need additional time to complete their studies in Oxford.
  • Value: a stipend of ÂŁ5,000 (split into two payments of ÂŁ1666.67 and one payment of ÂŁ1666.66, made at the start of each term). In addition, the holder is entitled to free Hertford College accommodation for the duration of the studentship.
  • Duration: Michaelmas Term to Trinity Term.

Two Mary Starun Senior Scholarships in Polish Studies

  • Eligibility: current Oxford DPhil students in the humanities and social sciences who are undertaking research primarily focused on Poland.
  • Value: a stipend of ÂŁ15,000 (split into three payments of ÂŁ5,000).
  • Duration: Michaelmas Term to Trinity Term.
