How fees work, and what you need to budget for.

Tuition fees

Tuition fees are set by the University and vary by course and fee status. These cover your teaching and other academic services and facilities provided to support your studies. They do not cover your accommodation, food or other living costs.

Accommodation

All accommodation at Hertford is the same cost regardless of size of room, location or property facilities.

For graduate students renting a single-occupancy room from the college, there is a flat rate of £28.34 per night (2025–26 rates). The standard rental period is from 19 September 2025 until 13 July 2026. If needed, there are options to extend this at the start and end of the licence, but this is not guaranteed.

Annual cost: Standard licence (19 September 2025 to 13 July 2026) = £8,416.98

Additional nights outside the standard licence are charged at the nightly rate. Charges increase annually on 1 August.

Your rent includes all utilities and a basic level of insurance cover provided by Howden. You should also budget for additional costs like laundry. Pay-per-use laundry facilities are available in a number of college accommodation buildings.

Meals

All our graduate accommodation comes equipped with shared kitchen facilities.

You can also dine in our historic Hall on the main college site. Three meals a day are served on weekdays during term time, with brunch available at weekends and an optional formal dinner three times a week.

For standard daily meals, there is no set charge, as the cost is based on the items selected. It’s easy to keep track of your spending with our catering app, allowing you to log your spending online before receiving an invoice at the end of each term.

Indicative costs for catered meals (excluding drinks) are as follows. Please note that your individual spending may be significantly more or less than these figures.

Weekday breakfast (4 items) = £3.32

Weekend brunch (8 items) = £6.26

Lunch or dinner (main and sides) = £5.75

Dessert = £1.55

Three-course formal (optional) = £11.40*
*guest tickets, wine, and 4-course black tie formals differ

Our popular Buttery café offers subsidised barista-style drinks and cakes seven days a week in term time, providing a relaxed study and social space in the heart of Hertford’s main quad.
