Shortlist announced for Unsung Heroes of Science 2021
8 June 2021
Discover the stories of scientists who deserve wider recognition in this year’s shortlist of 30 videos, submitted by teenagers from around the world.
Our Unsung Heroes of Science video competition challenges young people to share stories of the scientists who have been left out of the textbooks. The 30 new videos mark the third year of the competition, bringing the total number of videos in our resource bank to 74. This year’s unsung heroes are as varied as ever, from well-known pioneers overlooked for Nobel Prizes to an ancient perfumer and even an anti-hero of science – watch them all on our Unsung Heroes homepage or in this YouTube playlist.
The winners, chosen by Prof. Alison Woollard, will be announced at our live celebration event on Tuesday 29th June. The event will start with a conversation between Alison and award-winning science writer Angela Saini which is open to all – free tickets can be reserved on Eventbrite. All the shortlisted teams from the UK will receive a signed copy of Angela’s book Superior, while the winners will go behind-the-scenes in the run up to the famous Royal Institution Christmas Lectures. There’s also a gong for the most-watched video, so get sharing your favourites to keep them in contention for the Audience Award!
