Outreach award winners

We’re delighted to have presented the third annual Tanner Awards for outstanding contributions to access and outreach.
Our team of Student Ambassadors are vital in supporting our work with schools and colleges, helping to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in making an informed choice about university. From term-time school visits to Open Days and admissions interviews, our Ambassadors demonstrate the friendly and inclusive community that makes Hertford College so special, as well providing an invaluable insight into student life.
This year’s Tanner Awards were presented at the annual Outreach & Admissions Dinner to the six students who have contributed the most to our programmes and initiatives throughout the last year. Alicia Fisher was awarded a prize for her excellent work as JCR Access Officer, a role in which she has helped our Outreach Team to organise events and recruit Ambassadors. Carina Williams, Nina Turnbull and Amelia Fantham were our most active ambassadors this year, volunteering at a huge number of schools visits and college tours – all received prizes for their commitment and dedication to outreach. Rory Saitch and Emma Rumford were recognised for their outstanding contributions to our Open Days and admissions exercise, both being model ambassadors for both events. They also had the unenviable job of being questioned by their tutors for mock interviews in front of audiences exceeding 200 on our Open Days, a task they accomplished superbly.
Each prize is worth £250 and has been funded by a donation from one of Neil Tanner’s former students and his partner, who are keen champions of Hertford’s proactive and inclusive approach to outreach. Neil Tanner was Hertford’s Tutor for Admissions from the 1960s and pioneered opening up access to the University for students from under-represented backgrounds – work we proudly continue today.
