Award-winning outreach

Last night we were thrilled to award the second annual Tanner Awards for outstanding contributions to outreach.
The prizes recognise the hard work and commitment of our team of trained Student Ambassadors who support our work with schools and colleges throughout the year. From term-time school visits to Open Days and admissions interviews, our Ambassadors offer a friendly welcome to prospective students and provide and insight into student life.
This year’s winners demonstrate the huge range of activities that our Ambassadors get involved in. Katie Chester was awarded a prize for her sterling work as JCR Access Rep, a role in which she has helped our Outreach Team to organise events and recruit Ambassadors, as well as leading the redevelopment of our alternative prospectus and access blog. Adam Busby, Eleanor Frew and Fenella Sentance all received prizes for their commitment and dedication to outreach, between them volunteering for the most events this year. Ahmed Alhussni and Sophie Claypole, as well as being Hertford Ambassadors, received prizes in recognition of their work with Target Schools over the last year. As Co-Chairs, Ahmed and Sophie coordinated Oxford SU’s flagship access and outreach programme (established in 1982), organising shadowing opportunities for Year 12 students to discover what it’s like to study at Oxford.
Each prize is worth £250 and has been funded by a donation from one of Neil Tanner’s former students and his partner, who are keen champions of Hertford’s proactive and inclusive approach to outreach. Neil Tanner was Hertford’s Tutor for Admissions from the 1960s and pioneered opening up access to the University for students from under-represented backgrounds – work we proudly continue today.
