We can accommodate graduate students at our dedicated graduate houses across the city, which offer a range of accommodation options.
Our bedrooms for graduates are located in three popular areas of north Oxford (Park Town, Jericho and Summertown) and in vibrant east Oxford (St Stephen’s House). All are within a short distance of the main college site, which can be easily accessed by foot, bicycle or bus. We endeavour to house as many first-year graduates as possible, but cannot guarantee accommodation for all applicants. If your programme is longer than a year, you will be eligible to enter a ballot for housing in your subsequent years of study.
Accommodation is for single occupancy (including single beds) with shared facilities (bathrooms and kitchens). We do not segregate accommodation by gender, race or religion and house both fresher and continuing postgraduate students in the same properties.
We have limited accommodation for couples so we suggest that if you’re looking for couples or family accommodation you also contact the University’s Graduate Accommodation Office (separate to Hertford’s accommodation office).
Park Town & Jericho
Park Town is a beautiful 19th-century suburb just north of the city centre near to University Parks, where there are over 70 acres of open parkland, popular jogging routes, and the meandering River Cherwell. The independent shops and pubs of North Parade are a popular feature of the area too. Our college houses at 8, 9, 10 and 11 Winchester Road offer single bedrooms with shared bathrooms, kitchens and laundry facilities. The College expects to commence building the new Graduate Centre in North Oxford at some point in the next academic year. There will be associated construction and noise in the gardens of Winchester Road/Banbury Road.
Jericho has two of our properties 63 and 64 St Bernard’s Road, both offer single bedrooms with shared kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities.
Summertown is a large community situated 2.5km from the city centre, yet easily accessible – half an hour on foot or ten minutes by bike or bus. As well as independent shops, bars, cafes and restaurants, there are several small supermarkets, a weekly farmers’ market and a public leisure centre with gym and swimming pool. Our graduate flat at 214b Banbury Road offers six single bedrooms with laundry facilities available at our other property across the road. 189 Banbury Road is a large 16 bedrooms house which offers shared bathrooms, kitchens and laundry facilities.
St Stephen's House
St Stephen’s House is a permanent private hall of the University located between Cowley Road and Iffley Road in east Oxford. This popular student area includes many shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as the University’s sports centre. Hertford has arranged an annexe of accommodation within St Stephen’s comprised of several floors in one wing. This annexe is integrated in the wider community of St Stephen’s. Accommodation at St Stephens offers single bedrooms with shared bathrooms, kitchens and laundry facilities.
Applying for graduate accommodation
While we try to accommodate all graduate freshers requiring accommodation, this is not guaranteed. All graduate applicants who are offered a place at Hertford (either conditional or unconditional) are asked if they wish to be considered for graduate accommodation. After sending offer letters to applicants the Hertford Accommodation Office will get in touch with the graduate accommodation application form.
In the interests of ensuring that as much space as possible is allocated to the students most in need of support (irrespective of the point in the cycle at which they apply) we allocate rooms on a monthly basis throughout the application cycle. Please see below for details of this year’s allocation dates and our prioritisation schema.
With a wide variety of buildings of different sizes and ages, no two rooms at Hertford are the same. All of our bedrooms are for single occupancy and include a single bed, desk, chair and storage. While there are some ensuite rooms available, the vast majority share kitchen and bathroom facilities, which are regularly cleaned by our housekeeping team. Wi-Fi is available in all college buildings, as well as across the University more widely. Please note that we do not provide bedding and cannot offer parking spaces due to the constraints of our city centre buildings.
Application processing dates
In the interests of ensuring that as much space as possible is allocated to the students most in need of support (irrespective of the point in the cycle at which they apply) we allocate rooms on a monthly basis throughout the application cycle. We will allocate a number of graduate rooms on the following:
- week of 24 April 2023
- week of 22 May 2023
- week of 19 June 2023
During each allocation week, you will be contacted either to confirm that your application has been successful and a room has been allocated to you, or to notify you that your application has not been successful in the cycle and that it will be considered again in the next release of rooms. If at any point you decide to withdraw your application and make your own arrangements for accommodation, please let us know by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
Hertford College cannot guarantee accommodation for all graduate applicants. Therefore, the categories of offer-holder we consider priorities for graduate accommodation allocation are as below (with number one being the highest priority):
- Those with disabilities or other special requirements which would make it hard to find suitable private, rented accommodation at short notice.
- Those intending to come to Oxford for the first time for graduate study who have no previous experience of the UK education system.
- Those with previous experience of the UK education system who have already met the academic conditions of their offer and have submitted their financial declaration.
- Those with previous experience of the UK education system who have already met the academic conditions of their offer but have not yet submitted their financial declaration.
- Those with previous experience of the UK education system who have yet to meet their academic conditions and who have not yet submitted their financial declaration.
Deposits and confirmation
If you are offered accommodation at Hertford, you will be asked to pay a deposit of £400 to secure the accommodation. You will be expected to pay this deposit (which will be credited towards your rent) within 14 days of receiving our offer of college accommodation.
The £400 deposit is refundable if you fail to meet the conditions of your offer (either academic or financial), if you defer your place or withdraw prior to the start of the academic year, or if you suspend your studies during the academic year. If you take up your place to study at Hertford, yet decide to live in alternative accommodation, the £400 deposit will be retained by Hertford.
