Associate Professorship of Economics

The Department of Economics and Hertford College are recruiting an Associate Professor of Economics to commence employment in September 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The successful candidates will be members of the Department of Economics and will undertake independent research, undergraduate and graduate teaching, and student supervision. The roles will also include administrative and pastoral responsibilities within both the Department and the College.

We welcome applications from candidates conducting research in any field of Economics.

Appointments to Associate Professor can include those at the start of their careers directly from PhD, as well as more established researchers.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate a high standard of research potential and achievement depending on experience, and the ability to enthuse and inspire students at both undergraduate and graduate levels through tutorials, classes, lectures, and supervision. Applicants should be interested in promoting a culture of equality and diversity in the workplace.

The appointment is for 5 years in the first instance, with reappointment until retirement upon completion of a successful review. The University of Oxford uses the grade of Associate Professor for most of its academic appointments.

The Department and College offer an exciting research and teaching environment and an attractive financial package to the successful applicant.

Please submit your application by midnight UTC on the 13 of November 2026 via Econjobmarket:  EJM – Econ Job Market

Initial online interviews with the hiring committee will take place during the European Job Market, 14-17 December 2026.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to visit Oxford as part of the recruitment process and will be asked to:

  • Deliver a one-hour research presentation.
  • Attend an interview with members of the Department of Economics and the College.
  • Deliver a teaching presentation to undergraduate students and respond to questions from the student audience.

We welcome applications from individuals from all backgrounds, including those currently under-represented within higher education. No applicant or member of staff will be unlawfully discriminated against on the grounds of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation.

Employment with the University, and progression within employment, will be determined solely by personal merit and the application of criteria related to the duties and requirements of the post. In all cases, the primary consideration will be the ability to perform the role. As set out in the University’s Equality Policy and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan, our commitment to equality and diversity goes hand in hand with our commitment to academic freedom and freedom of speech.
