Eating at Hertford

Hertford food has a great reputation across Oxford!

We serve breakfast, lunch and dinner every day during term time on our main college site, with an ever-popular brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.

Meals are filling and wholesome, priced to offer excellent value for students, and we cater for a range of dietary requirements, including vegetarian, vegan and halal options.

Eating in Hall is an important part of social life at Hertford. Students can choose to eat together regularly, as well as attending dinners connected with subjects, societies and other college events. Private group dinners and drinks receptions are also welcomed throughout the academic year.

Catering provision continues on main site through much of the year, including outside undergraduate term time when postgraduate students are in residence.

Formal Hall and special occasions

Formal Hall takes place three times a week. These are served dinners in Hall and are an opportunity to eat with friends in a more formal setting.

There are also regular themed formals, including Valentine’s Day, Halloween and Oxmas, as well as other special events ranging from four-course black-tie dinners to student barbecues.

Located in OB Quad, The Buttery Café is a welcoming space for students, staff and visitors to relax, meet and enjoy refreshments throughout the day. The café serves freshly prepared barista coffee, a selection of teas, and homemade cakes made by Hertford College’s chefs. The college bar, known as DTB (‘Down The Bar’) is located in the basement of NB4. Alongside its regular opening hours, the space hosts JCR-organised events throughout the year, including band nights, quizzes, and BOPs. The bar provides a lively and informal setting for students to socialise and take part in events.
Request for Booking events in the bar will go through the Food and Housing Officer before being authorized by the Catering Services Manager.
