Laura Hudson
Third-year Medicine student
Hello! I’m Laura, a medical student at Hertford. I am about to start third year, the final year of pre-clinical Medicine.
Hertford College is a fantastic place to study Medicine. We have amazing tutors, who are incredibly supportive. This allows us to fully enjoy and engage in our studies, and be challenged academically, without feeling overly pressured.
Our tutors also help support you in pursuing any opportunities offered outside of the Oxford course. For example, I have just returned from a Summer School in Innovative Surgery in Moscow, participating in a Colorectal and Urology module. On the course, I received intensive training in both basic and advanced surgical skills, including laparoscopic techniques; this meant that by the end of week one, I was able to assist in my first surgery, a buccal urethroplasty! This was an absolutely incredible experience, which is near-impossible to obtain in the UK as a pre-clinical student. The summer school also allowed me to make friends with students and clinicians from a range of medical schools across the UK and Russia, learn more about another country’s healthcare system, and of course, explore Moscow too.
I want to thank both Prof. Greaves and Mr Brewster, who together assisted me with my application to the summer school and observe some more surgery before I went! Hertford is definitely the college with the happiest and friendliest medics and tutors in my opinion; hopefully you will visit us on our next open day to see for yourself!
