Roy Stuart Fellowship in Law
Dr Roy Stuart was Law Tutor at Hertford from 1969 until his retirement in 2003. When Roy joined the college there were only 7 Law students; by the time he retired three decades later there were 45 Law students engaged in undergraduate and postgraduate study. Over his time at Hertford, he taught over 400 students, who have gone onto careers not only as lawyers but also in education, the charity sector, the civil service and politics, the arts, finance, as well as entrepreneurs, film-makers and sports professionals.
When Roy died aged 68 in 2005 a memorial fund was set up in his name which has been used to support graduate scholarships in Law. We would now like to renew the fund in his memory to create the Roy Stuart Fellowship in Law.
Dr Kate Greasley joined Hertford in October 2018 as the college’s inaugural Roy Stuart Fellow in Law. Kate read Law at New College Oxford, graduating with a first-class degree, before studying for the BCL and later DPhil. Her thesis focussed on the notion of personhood in relation to abortion laws, a topic on which she continues to specialise. During her time as a research student she held a stipendiary lectureship at Hertford College, and later took up a Junior Research Fellowship at University College.

Are you a higher-rate tax-payer?
If you are a higher-rate tax-payer, you could donate £12,500 to Hertford and it would only cost you £7,500.
A gift of £10,000 is worth £12,500 to Hertford once you add Gift Aid. Higher rate tax-payers can also claim the difference between the basic and higher rate of tax on the self-assessment tax return. This means that same gift of £10,000 gift would only cost £7,500 at the end of the tax year.

How much should I donate?
We know that people’s finances change over the course of a lifetime, and circumstances will influence whether you prefer to make a single gift or a regular donation.
If you decide to make a lump sum donation, there is no lower or upper limit. In our fundraising for fellowships, alumni have given anything from £20 right up to £100,000.
If you decide to set up a regular gift, some people find it helpful to know what the average donation is to Hertford. So we’ve included below the average monthly gift from Hertford’s alumni according to age range:

Setting up a regular gift
A regular gift is an ideal way of supporting Hertford and the Roy Stuart Fellowship. Even small gifts can add up to a big total – if every Law alumnus set up a monthly donation of £20 or more, we would reach our goal within two years.
A monthly gift of £20 adds up to £240 a year – and that is worth £300 to Hertford with Gift Aid.

How will my gift be used?
Hertford has launched a new fundraising campaign to encourage alumni to give back to their subjects. This sits alongside Student Support (bursaries, hardship grants, scholarships and outreach) as one of our most pressing priorities for the college.
The Roy Stuart Fellowship will be co-funded by the College and the Law Faculty, with Hertford’s share of the funding amounting to just under £50,000 a year. Your donations to the Roy Stuart Fellowship will go into a ring-fenced fund, which will support the salary and associated costs of Hertford’s share of the post.

Fundraising target
Our fundraising target is twofold:
- Firstly to raise £500,000 to secure ten years of funding to support this post at Hertford.
- Once that first goal is reached, our second goal will be to endow Hertford’s share of the post in perpetuity, which would require a fund of £1.6m or more.
We will mark the completion of the fund with a celebratory dinner in college.
