Paul Dryden (1966–2026)

13 April 2026

It is with deep sadness that we record the passing of Paul Dryden, former Head of the Development Office and Fellow of Hertford College, who passed away on 9 April, shortly before his 60th birthday, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Paul was a man of great cheer and intelligence, an Oxford graduate whose warmth and wit endeared him to colleagues and friends alike. A devoted husband and father, he combined professional dedication with a generous spirit, always ready to share a cup of tea and a thoughtful conversation on any subject that captured his interest.

At Hertford, Paul faced the formidable challenge of building a fundraising strategy in the wake of the 2008–2009 financial crisis, a time of considerable uncertainty across the University. With characteristic determination, he succeeded in securing vital support for the college, reminding donors not only of cherished memories but of the transformative potential their gifts could bring to students, the college, and the wider world. His words at Gaudy dinners were remembered for their eloquence and conviction.

Beyond his professional life, Paul was a proud volunteer with the military, a patriotic citizen, and a passionate railway enthusiast who could identify and discuss locomotives with boundless enthusiasm. He delighted in the simple pleasures of Oxford life – whether punting on the Cherwell, enjoying half a pint at a local pub, or pausing for a ‘good cuppa’ in the middle of the day.

Paul Dryden will be remembered not only for his service to Hertford College but also for his kindness, humour, refreshing candour, and unwavering devotion to family and community. He leaves a legacy of commitment and friendship that will long be cherished.

His funeral will take place at the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Kirtlington OX5 3HJ on Wednesday 29 April at 12 noon, with refreshments at Kirtlington Village Hall after the service. There will be a livestream for those unable to attend. Donations may be given in memory of Paul for Katharine House Hospice.

Obituary supplied by Dr Cristopher Ballinas Valdés, DPhil in Politics, Hertford College, 2003, and Anna Baskerville, former Deputy Head of Development, Hertford College.
