Hertford & Geography

Geography has enjoyed a long and distinguished place at Hertford for many years.

With four academics and over 30 students at any one time, it is one of the largest and liveliest Geography colleges in the University. Our students regularly embark on ambitious projects around the world as part of their studies, and our academics are at the forefront of geographical research, looking at everything from climate change and flooding, to how the germs in your kitchen affect your day-to-day life.

Fundraising for Geography

Hertford aims to raise £150,000 towards the college’s share of a tutorial post in Geography. This will secure the college’s share of funding for one tutorial post for ten years. So far we have raised £112,000 towards this goal.

Hertford’s Geography Fellows

Professor Jamie Lorimer
Tutorial Fellow in Geography
Professor David Thomas
Professor of Geography

Dr Jamie Lorimer

Jamie joined Hertford in 2012 as a Fellow and Tutor in Geography. Having received his BSc and PhD from the University of Bristol, Jamie took up a post-doctoral fellowship at Oxford in 2005 and lectured for four years at Kings College London before taking up his post at Hertford.

Jamie’s research interests encompass cultural geography, the geographies of science, the politics of Nature and wildlife conservation. His recent research covers the Anthropocene – the impact that humans have on the planet – as well as the microbiome and new approaches to human and environmental health. He is currently collaborating with Dr Maan Barua at the University of Cambridge on a project that looks at the connections with animals and health in cities. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in the UK, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands, and he has been a visiting researcher at the Universities of British Columbia and Peradeniya (Sri Lanka).

Dr Louise Slater

Louise completed her PhD at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of St Andrews in 2014. She subsequently held positions at Queen Mary College, University of London, and the University of Iowa before taking up the position of Lecturer in Geography at Loughborough University in 2017. Her research focuses on understanding and predicting changes in floods and fluvial systems in the context of contemporary shifts in climate and land cover.

Professor David Thomas

David was a student at Hertford College from 1977-1984, at a time when Hertford began to be the leading collegiate player in Oxford Geography. In 1984 he completed his DPhil under Andrew Goudie’s supervision, on long-term environmental change in the Kalahari Desert, and immediately took up a lectureship at Sheffield University. He rose to become Professor and Head of Department and, after 20 years there, returned to Oxford in 2004 as University Statutory Professor of Geography, with a Fellowship at Hertford.

David has been Vice-President of the Royal Geographical Society, President of the British Geomorphological Research Group (now the British Society for Geomorphology), and he was a member of the 2008 Geography and Environmental studies panel in the UK Research Assessment Exercise. In 2006 he was appointed as an Honorary Professor at the University of Cape Town in recognition of his contributions to geographic science in Africa, and in 2011 he received the Farouk El-Baz Award for Desert Research from the Geological Society of America.
