BA Economics and Management

Admissions requirements

Course structure

Average student intake: 8

Course length: 3 years

Hertford is home to one of the largest communities of undergraduates studying Economics and Management in the University. Here you’ll have the enormous advantage of a wide cohort of peers to share your learning with. This large group also means that we can resource additional classes and ensure that your training in mathematical techniques is well supported.

We have a proud history of success and innovation at Hertford – both of our Economics professors are women, and we were on of the first colleges in the University to offer Management degrees. You can help us to build on this.

Neither Economics nor Management can be studied alone at undergraduate level at Oxford. We offer the BA in Economics & Management as well as the joint honours course in Philosophy, Politics & Economics (PPE), which also admits around nine students each year. All of these courses are demanding and require hard work but can also be very rewarding. You’ll be able to build skills, forge partnerships and develop your critical and analytical thinking.

  • Teaching and learning

Analytical and logical skills are key to understanding how modern economies work. At Hertford, we help you to develop these skills through tutorial teaching, independent study and regular contact with leading researchers in the field.

Small-group tutorials mean that you get to work alongside expert tutors and test your ideas in a supportive setting. If we don’t have the specialist expertise in college for a specific topic we will work closely with tutors from across the University to arrange teaching at a different college. Your tutorials will be supported by larger classes and University lectures open to students from all colleges.

In your first year you’ll gain an overview of economics, general management and financial management. You can then build on these foundations in your second and third years with more in-depth economics and a whole range of optional subjects, ranging from game theory to the study of developing countries.

  • After Hertford

Our graduates go on to a wide variety of exciting careers, using the analytical and logical skills they develop during their degree. In the past, former students have started careers in government, law, teaching and the City, although the only real limit is your ambition and a degree in Economics & Management can open a vast array of career options.

  • Making an application

Mathematical competency is essential for the more quantitative aspects of Economics & Management. We therefore only accept applications with an ‘A’ in A Level Mathematics (or an equivalent). You will also have to sit Section 1 of the Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA), for which you can download past papers online. For the full and most up-to-date admissions criteria, see the University website.

In your application – and in your interview if you are shortlisted – we want to see evidence of your interest in and motivation for studying the organisation of business and the economy. Interviews are not a test and we won’t be looking to find any specific knowledge. We want to see your abilities to analyse and solve problems logically and critically. We want to see your capacity to construct and assess arguments. And we want to see your ability to express ideas clearly and effectively, both on paper and orally.
