After a B.A. from Sheffield, Nick came to Oxford for the B.Phil. He subsequently spent a few years living in Paris where he studied linguistics, but returned to the UK to do a PhD at Leeds. Nick is Stipendiary Lecturer in Philosophy at Hertford College and Stipendiary Lecturer in Logic at Keble College.
First year papers: Introduction to Logic, Elements of Deductive Logic, General Philosophy.
Finals papers: Knowledge and Reality, Philosophy of Logic and Language, Philosophy of Science.
Nick is currently working on a cluster of questions in philosophy of language, philosophy of linguistics, and social ontology. One significant focus is on the nature of linguistic entities such as words and sentences, and the contrasting conceptions of these provided in linguistics and philosophy. His work on this topic aims to uphold a scientific realist attitude regarding linguistic theory while resisting overly scientistic sceptical attitudes towards public language.
