Professor Elizabeth Baldwin receives 2025 Recognition of Distinction

We are delighted to announce that Professor Elizabeth Baldwin has been awarded the title of Professor of Economics as part of the University of Oxford’s 2025 Recognition of Distinction process.

This follows hard on the heels of her Social Sciences Division Teaching Excellence Award earlier in the year, made in recognition of exceptional contributions to teaching in environmental economics and climate change.

Elizabeth originally studied mathematics, completing her undergraduate degree in 2003 and a DPhil in 2006 at Oxford. After a spell as a postdoc in mathematics, she transferred her attention to economics, studying the MPhil and then the DPhil at Oxford, finishing in 2014. She joined Hertford after a postdoc at the Grantham Research Institute of the London School of Economics, as well as having held a Research Fellowship at Nuffield College, Oxford.

Her research focuses on microeconomic theory and environmental policy, using advanced mathematical tools to inform auction and market design, and her designs have been applied in practice, in the Bank of England, the auctions which allocate subsidies for renewable energy, and in supporting food and habitat provision for turtle doves.

The Recognition of Distinction scheme is held annually to confer the title of full professor on academics who demonstrate sustained excellence in research, teaching and citizenship. Following a rigorous review process by divisional committees and the University’s senior appointments board, Elizabeth Baldwin was among those approved for the title in 2025.
