Recognition of Distinction in English & Geography
2 November 2020
Congratulations are in order for two Hertford fellows, recognised by the University for their outstanding research, teaching and citizenship.
The annual Recognition of Distinction exercise confers the title of full professor at the University of Oxford. In order to be considered, academics must have an ongoing research record characterised by significant influence on the field of study in addition to delivering effective teaching and demonstrating their involvement in college or University administration.
Tutorial Fellow in English, David Dwan becomes Professor of English Literature and Intellectual History. Tutorial Fellow in Geography, Jamie Lorimer becomes Professor of Environmental Geography.
Professor Dwan’s recent monograph, Liberty, Equality and Humbug: Orwell’s Political Ideals, reassesses a literary and intellectual figure much referenced in contemporary politics. His latest work can be read in the newly-published Irish Literature in Transition, 1700-1780 and The Cambridge Companion to Nineteen Eighty-Four.
Professor Lorimer’s new book, The Probiotic Planet: Using Life to Manage Life, will be published by the University of Minnesota Press later this month.
