iyatraQuartet Livestream
24 April 2021 - 19:30
Music lecturer Dr Alice Barron performs with her quartet this weekend – join them with this live-streamed concert.
24th April 2021 marks one year since the release of iyatraQuartet’s second album, Break the Dawn. The band are excited to celebrate a new dawn breaking in the UK as everyone reconnects with friends and family and looks forward to the summer ahead.
This anniversary concert will feature four favourite tracks from Break the Dawn: the title track ‘Bhairav (Break the Dawn)’ based on an Indian raga for the first light of day; ‘Black Seas’ inspired by John Masefield’s seminal poem Sea Fever; upbeat ‘Chandra’ that melds a mode common to Medieval plainchant and raga Yaman; and iyatraQuartet’s arrangement of a 14th century Arabic love song in ‘Lama Bada’. iyatraQuartet will also perform four unreleased songs created in lockdown and inspired by a Grimm fairy tale, a twelfth-century hymn to St Magnus and two colossal female composers of medieval music – Hildegard of Bingen and Beatriz de Dia.
All the pieces in this concert are rooted in ancient music and folk tales, re-imagined with a unique contemporary twist. This concert will be brought to you live from within the stunning Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses, South London, via Zoom, and will last approximately 1 hour. Tickets are £10, available here: www.iyatraQuartet.com
