“I started out life 40 years ago as a physicist motivated to work on solar energy. At that time there were very few opportunities to do this and so I ended up doing a few years of lab research in semiconductors that didn’t particularly excite me. I then took a leap and started working for Edinburgh Science Festival in a role to engage teh general public with science and tech. Remarkably I have been doing this ever since, most of it as director. It has been exceedingly rewarding; I have been highly motivated by working in the charitable sector where our aims are social and educational benefits rather than profit. Of course we must run the organisation with the same level of efficiency and determination you would a private organisation to prosper. We are now an international organisation doing a lot of work that I am very proud of. I am happy to talk to anyone that thinks social enterprises might be for them.”
