Shloke Joshi
Fifth-year Medicine student
I am nearing the end of paediatrics rotation in my 5th year of Medicine at Hertford, which is my second clinical year.
Being able to study medicine at Hertford has been an enriching experience and I couldn’t have chosen a better college to be a part of. The pastoral support as well as the fantastic tutorial teaching offered by Professor Greaves in the first 3 years of the course made it the transition from school to university seamless. This didn’t change when I entered clinical school as the team of Dr Brewster, Dr Biswas and Dr Bettinson provided phenomenal weekly teaching to make sure we quickly got acclimatised to the clinical environment.
Highlights of my time studying Medicine at Hertford include my special study module during 4th year where I was able to write my own systematic review on the effects of aspirin in prostate cancer patients which is currently being edited with the aim of publishing! I was also fortunate enough to receive a travel grant from the Vaughan-Williams fund at Hertford which enabled me to undertake my Women’s Reproductive Health placement during 5th year in the Bahamas! I cannot be more grateful for this opportunity as it was so rewarding to see the care of labouring women in a completely different healthcare system.
Whilst I continue to currently work on a submission for an essay prize on old age psychiatry ran by the royal college of psychiatrists, I look forward to continuing my medical education at Hertford with the hopes of becoming a psychiatrist in the not too distant future. For anyone considering applying to Hertford to read Medicine, I honestly can’t think of a better place than Hertford to be a medical student.
