“After leaving Hertford, where I enjoyed a fantastic three years reading History, playing rugby and enjoying everything that Oxford life had to offer, I faced a predicament that many Historians find themselves in, not knowing quite what to do next. After an initial taste of the legal profession, which involved spending a year in Bupa’s Legal team, I changed tack and joined KPMG’s Tax practice as a Graduate Trainee. Over the course of the next three years I studied for my Chartered Accountancy and Tax qualifications whilst working in the firm’s Financial Services M&A Tax team. Upon qualification, I moved from the world of M&A into the firm’s Banking Tax practice where I have worked for the last two years.
The Tax profession offers an opportunity to utilise the analytical skills developed by reading History and, at a time where tax policy is a key battleground for debate at every general election, it is a dynamic and interesting area to work in. I would be more than happy to meet with anyone who is considering a career in Tax or who would like to understand what life at a large accountancy firm is like. I am also equally happy to provide advice to anyone who, like me, was not entirely sure what they wanted to do with themselves after leaving Oxford.”
