“I was really lucky that I (almost accidentally!) fell in to programming during university. Like most non-comp-scis, it wasn’t really on my radar and I didn’t realise how much fun building (or breaking) software could be, or how many doors it would open. If you take away one thing from reading this, it’s that you don’t need to study computer science to work as a developer!!
There’s huge variety between roles and companies, but often you’re building a real product that someone, somewhere, is going to use to make their life better or easier. You get to use the technical skills you spent so long developing at university and you never stop learning if you don’t want to. I’d say the lifestyle generally compares pretty favourably to the City, though that is only based on anecdata.
If a career building, tinkering and pushing computers to their limits sounds interesting to you, please reach out and I’d be happy to chat about what’s out there and how you can get there.”
