Name: Mary Waireri
Matriculation Year: 2008
Subject: History
Occupation: Freelance Brand Strategist and Copywriter and Creative Scriptwriter
“After graduating, I knew I wanted to work in a creative field- I had a passion for film but I also wanted a steady paycheque, so I took a more conventional route and worked for over 9 years in Marketing and Advertising developing creative concepts for global brands. This involved everything from working on storyboards for TV campaigns, to creating brand films and testing creative ideas with audiences. I relished the process of seeing something go from a concept scribbled on a post-it to a tangible product. The best part about working in Marketing is being able to reach millions of people with your ideas.
However, I still knew that I wanted to pursue my passion for film and storytelling so I eventually took the leap and decided to go Freelance as a Brand Specialist and Copywriter so that I could explore different creative roles. This led me to work for an independent production company as a Creative Scriptwriter on short-form branded content, writing scripts and attending shoots alongside studying Screenwriting at the National Film and Television School.
Feel free to get in touch if you want advice on unconventional ‘Squiggly’ career journeys, want to know more about how to get into Advertising and Marketing or if you’re a BAME student curious about navigating corporate environments as a minority.”
