“A history degree gave me a lot of useful critical analytical skills but there wasn’t a clear natural path to follow when I graduated. My career path has been less than straight forward, with a mix of formal schemes, temp positions, further study and permanent roles, but my interests in public policy and social impact have always driven what I’ve decided to do next. I was very lucky to get my first break through with the inaugural DFID graduate scheme and since then I’ve been fortunate to do a series of really interesting public sector roles. Whether local government or international development, these have involved a lot of analysis, political awareness, and striking a balance between responding to what’s going on around you and delivering longer-term strategies – perfect if you like variety and challenge! I’m always happy to grab a coffee and chat about working in the public sector, international development and global health, and about steps to get into a public sector/international development career.”
