“I’ve landed in a classic PPEist role – as a glorified policy analyst. Rather than working for a government body, I’ve spent the last 15 years working for a range of trade associations representing different industries – insurance, payments, and banking. Trade bodies are paid for by their members, and primarily focus on ensuring the regulatory and legislative framework for their industry works well, so an economic/ political background is very useful. I also studied for a law masters in the evenings during my late 20s which has proven to be a good return on the time investment.
The most interesting part of my job is the collaborative projects I can get involved in on behalf of industry players. For example, I ran a project to establish a tracing office for old insurance policies, helping people with work-based illnesses receive compensation. I’ve also run a project to expand the use of contactless payment cards on public transport – it started in London and now is going live on light rail and tram in cities like Manchester, Edinburgh and smaller bus routes around the country.”
