Law & joint schools interviews
Thank you for applying to Oxford to study Law or Law with Law Studies in Europe.
A very warm (virtual!) welcome from the Hertford Law tutors. We hope you are all managing to take good care of yourselves in these challenging times and are so looking forward to meeting and chatting with you during the course of the interviews.
The most important thing you should know is that the interviews are not the sole basis on which our final decisions will be made. Everything else you have to be proud of—your GCSE results, A Levels progress, LNAT scores, and the wonderful things your teachers have written about you—play an important part in this process, right through to the end. The interview is really only one extra little piece of information to add into the mix, and we are keenly aware of how unsettling an interview like this can be, and that it is very difficult to get the full sense of what you can do from a short, online interview.
That said, in the interview itself, we will try and have a fun discussion and give you a sense of what a Law degree at Oxford might involve. We’ll start with a short discussion about some material which we will give you to look at. The material will be short; you’ll have a few minutes to read and think about it while we twiddle our thumbs, and then we’ll have a chat about it and hear some of your thoughts. We might argue with you a little bit, but that doesn’t mean we think you’re wrong – just that we’re trying to tease out more of how you’re thinking about something.
You will need a device with access to Microsoft Teams, a microphone and webcam to take part in the interviews. Take a look at our Online Interviews Technology page to find out more and watch an introductory video. If you have any questions or concerns about the technology set-up, you should email undergraduate.admissions@hertford.ox.ac.uk and we’ll do our best to help.
One more thing, for when decisions finally come through. If it turns out that you don’t receive an offer to study here, please don’t be too disappointed, and be assured it does not mean you did anything wrong. There are lots of other brilliant universities where you will get an excellent legal education and, when you do brilliantly in that degree, you will have the option of coming to do graduate studies at Oxford (for which we won’t make you interview)!
