Engineering interviews
Thank you for applying to Oxford to study Engineering Science.
All shortlisted candidates will have two interviews, one conducted by Hertford tutors and one with tutors from a second college. We offer two separate interviews in an attempt to make sure that everyone has the best possible chance of admission. It is not uncommon for applicants to be admitted by a different college to the one to which they applied or were assigned – such an outcome is not at all to be regarded as somehow less good than being accepted at the first-choice college.
The interview is one part of the process we use to try to assess both your technical ability and your motivation to study Engineering. It will, as you would expect, focus mainly on the maths and physics you have covered at school. There will be no ‘trick’ questions and it’s perfectly acceptable to say ‘we haven’t covered that yet’. We may not carry a particular question through to the point of obtaining a final answer. This does not mean that you were on the wrong track or somehow ‘got it wrong’. It usually simply means that, since we have to work within time constraints, we want to move on to talk about something else.
For Engineering interviews, the University recommends that you have access to a Miro whiteboard (www.miro.com) and a touchscreen device and stylus to write out scientific/mathematical notation in addition to the device you use to access Microsoft Teams. Take a look at our Online Interviews Technology page to find out more and watch an introductory video. If you have any questions or concerns about the technology set-up, you should email undergraduate.admissions@hertford.ox.ac.uk and we’ll work with you to find alternatives.
We look forward to our virtual meeting with you.
