“During my time at Hertford, I was increasingly drawn to an academic career. I was accepted by the English Faculty to study for a BLitt, but couldn’t get a grant – so that was that.
I taught English for a while in Further Education, then found my way into services for young people with special educational needs. This developed an interest in psychology, and I took a second first degree by distance learning. In turn this led to professional training and a doctorate in clinical psychology. I worked in mental health for a time, then specialised in clinical health psychology in a large NHS acute hospital where I remained for 20 years. I became Head of the Psychology Service there, and worked with patients with chronic pain, or spinal cord injury. After finishing full-time work with the NHS, I held an academic post for five years, training new entrants to clinical psychology.
I now continue with a range of activities pro bono, including NHS staff support (particularly needed during the pandemic), various research interests and health research ethics.
I would be happy to talk with students or alumni interested in clinical psychology. Or career choice over time, based on experience…”
