Unsung Heroes of Science shortlist announced

This year’s shortlisted videos have been made by school students from around the world, shining a light on a new cohort of unsung scientists.

Now in its second year, our Unsung Heroes of Science competition challenges teenagers to make a short video celebrating the work of a scientist that history has forgotten. Having opened up the competition to individuals and students outside the UK due to the coronavirus pandemic, we were delighted to receive more entries than ever before. From the wonderful array of submissions, 24 videos have made this year’s shortlist. Their subjects range from 6th-century Indian mathematician Brahmagupta through to modern-day heroes still active in their fields like physicist Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell and fashion designer Suzanne Lee.

The winning videos will be chosen by Hertford Fellow in Biochemistry Prof. Alison Woollard, who is also the University’s Academic Champion for Public Engagement. However, we also have a special ‘Audience Award’ up for grabs – the most-watched video by noon on 29th June will take home the prize.
