“It took a while for me to settle down – although commissioning into the military is probably quite an odd interpretation of ’settling down’. I’ve been practicing criminal law since I qualified but until my current role, as a Legal Officer in the Royal Air Force, it had always been in conjunction with a sports career – first playing cricket and then crossing the boundary rope into sports journalism. I qualified into a large city law firm but soon moved into the public sector and law enforcement around white collar crime. This gave me the freedom to run off into the summer, where I had the opportunity to write about cricket for The Telegraph, and broadcast for the BBC and others. While it might sound mad to have given up getting paid to watch cricket when the weather is decent, my legal career was always a priority. So, when the opportunity arose to branch into international conflict law, I took it. Legal Officers in the military only commission once they’ve been practicing already, so the timing was perfect. And as for this area of law, well, it’s varied, interesting and is taking me to places and people I’d never even contemplated. For a more unusual, active practice, I couldn’t recommend it more.”
