The entire Hertford College community has been greatly saddened by the passing of alumnus and Honorary Fellow Lord Jeremy Heywood at the untimely age of 56. He was a brilliant Cabinet Secretary who believed passionately in his call to public service, as well as the role of a professional and impartial Civil Service dedicated to the public good. He would tell our undergraduates that there was no higher calling than this, nor indeed no more compelling or interesting a career. The college extends its deepest sympathies to his family, his friends, and all those who he knew and worked with. In the New Year we will celebrate this distinguished and irreplaceable public servant with a day of seminars dedicated to the values that he held most dearly.
