Professor Robin Devenish (1942–2025)

6 November 2025

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of Hertford Emeritus Fellow Robin Devenish, who died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on 27 October.

Robin was appointed to a University lectureship and Fellowship at Hertford College in 1979 and retired in 2010. He fulfilled many important roles both within the college, including as Senior Tutor and Dean, and in the Physics department, as well as making substantial contributions to key experiments in his research programmes and the development of departmental teaching courses, college teaching and the formation of the Tanner Physics Society at Hertford.

The funeral and requiem mass will be held on Tuesday 2 December at 11am, at St Anthony of Padua Church, Headley Way, Oxford OX3 7SS, with refreshments afterwards at the Victoria Arms, Mill Lane, Old Marston OX3 0PZ. Streaming will be available for those not able to attend in person at this link. Donations to Red Cross or Alzheimer’s Society in lieu of flowers.
