Matriculation goes virtual
19 October 2020
For the first time ever, Oxford’s historic matriculation ceremony has taken place online.
New students at Hertford joined in the celebrations last Saturday, albeit socially-distanced and in their new Covid household bubbles. After watching a online oration from the Vice-Chancellor, formally admitting them to the University, our freshers enjoyed pizza and prosecco in the OB Quad marquee. This celebration replaced the traditional brunch that previous years have enjoyed, but new Principal, Tom Fletcher, was on hand with a speech of his own. He thanked the students for their exemplary conduct during their first two weeks in Oxford and raised a toast to all those who helped them get here – parents, carers, teachers, friends and supporters.
Unfortunately, two household groups were in Covid isolation and missed out on the marquee celebrations. Tom paid a visit to the bottom of their staircase in Holywell Quad and the students dressed up in traditional sub fusc – Oxford’s dress code for matriculation and exams – despite being confined to their rooms.
You can watch the Principal’s speech below.
