Professor Sir David Goldberg 1934 – 2024
10 September 2024
We were saddened to hear of the death of alumnus and Honorary Fellow Professor Sir David Goldberg. Sir David studied medicine and psychology at Hertford, before taking up further training at St Thomas’ and the Maudsley Hospital under Sir Aubrey Lewis and Sir Michael Shepherd, followed by nearly 25 years at Manchester University. He then returned to the Maudsley, and ran the Psychiatry Institute at King’s College London until his retirement in 1999. A personal account of Sir David’s career can be found here.
Sir David has become most renowned for developing the General Health Questionnaire, a screening test for use in general practice, which paved the way for a more integrated mental health provision at community level.
Sir David Goldberg was knighted in 1997 and was made an Emeritus Professor at King’s College in 2000. The Hertford College flag will be flying at half mast for the rest of this week. We extend our condolences to Sir David’s family, friends, and colleagues.
