Iron from Cornflakes?
31 October 2013
Teachers often ask us what, aside from Admissions advice, we can offer groups of Y12 scientists visiting Oxford for a day. And the answer is: a great deal. Most recently, Dr Claire Vallance, one of our Tutors in Chemistry, organised a 45 minute session during which students extracted iron from two different brands of breakfast cereal to measure which contained more. For other groups, we have organised sessions on mathematical modelling in medicine and even an apportunity to use the amazing microscopes at the Department of Biochemistry. We also support events organised by the Physics and Computer Science departments and have recently appointed a lecturer – Henry Merivale – with special responsibility for outreach in Computer Science and Philosophy. So if you are a Computing or Science specialist school, do get in touch (matthew [dot] hiscock [at] hertford [dot] ox [dot] ac [dot] uk) to explore what we can offer.
