New podcast with visiting student lecturers launched
31 March 2021
Dr Charlie Lee-Potter and Sally Bayley join forces for the first episode of Charlie’s new podcast, ‘Inside A Mountain’.
Both College Lecturers in English for our Visiting Students programme, Charlie and Sally take a walk along the Thames to talk about Sally’s books and the childhood experiences which shaped them. Girl with Dove and No Boys Play Here conjure imaginary and literary landscapes for Sally to walk though in the company of Jane Eyre, David Copperfield and Falstaff. This way of writing fiction find its roots in her chaotic and deprived childhood and, as they walk along the Oxford riverbank, Sally and Charlie reflect on the seaside town she escaped from as a teenager and how literature and a powerful imagination shaped her.
As an artist, writer and broadcaster (and former BBC radio and television journalist), Charlie is interested in literature and the spoken word. In each episode of her new podcast series, she takes a contemplative walk with a musician, artist, writer or scientist. The podcast’s name – Inside A Mountain – comes from nature writer Nan Shepherd’s haunting phrase that “a mountain has an inside”. In Charlie’s company, walking isn’t to accumulate miles or conquer peaks but to travel through imaginary space, as well as real, solid territory underfoot.
