Professor Paul Klemperer to give the inaugural Zeeman lecture
10 September 2013
Professor Paul Klemperer, Edgeworth Professor of Economics at Nuffield College, Oxford, is to give the inaugural Zeeman lecture entitled New Auction Designs for Public Policy at Merton College at 3.30 pm on 10 September 2013.
This is the first in a new series of occasional public lectures organised by the Regulatory Policy Institute, to be held in various locations in the UK and overseas. The lectures are named in honour of Professor Sir Christopher Zeeman who helped establish the Institute during his time as Principal of Hertford College. This first lecture will also comprise the last session of the Institute’s annual conference, which is being held at Merton College on 9 and 10 September.
Professor Klemperer will describe a new auction design that helped the Bank of England after the Northern Rock bank run and may have broader applications in, for example, energy markets. Former Governor of the Bank of England Mervyn King has referred to the design as “a marvellous application of theoretical economics to a practical problem of vital importance.” Professor Klemperer will explain how recently developed mathematical ideas can have almost immediate application in the conduct of public policy.
The lecture is aimed at a wide audience and is open to all: this 5-minute video on the Guardian’s website gives a flavour.
Since space is limited, however, those wishing to attend and who have not already registered for the conference are asked to notify julia [dot] gibert [at] rpieu [dot] org so that a seat can be confirmed.Â
