Future Value Conflicts in the Anthropocene
16 February 2023 - 17 February 2023
Co-organised by Dr Blake Ewing (Hertford College, Oxford) and Dr Matthew Dennis (TUEindhoven)
This two-day workshop brings together UK- and Netherlands-based scholars associated with two interdisciplinary research projects: (1) Visions of the Anthropocene (funded by the British Academy & KNAW); and (2) Tomorrow’s Value Conflicts (funded by the TU/e Strategic Alliance).
This event includes two book launches:
Eleonora Viganò, Moral Choices for Our Future Selves: An Empirical Theory of Prudential Perception & Moral Theory of Prudence (Routledge 2022)
In Moral Choices for Our Future Selves, Eleonora Viganò answers these questions by investigating one’s moral relationship with one’s future self and providing insight on how to make the right choice for one’s future self.
Matthew Dennis, Georgy Ishmaev, Steven Umbrello, Jeroen van den Hoven eds., Values for a Post-Pandemic Future (Springer 2022)
In Values for a Post-Pandemic Future the authors ask what we’ve learnt from the recent pandemic, and how this helps us understand future environmental challenges. The authors argue that the SARS-CoV-2 virus has changed the way we live for the foreseeable future. It has forced many to live in ways they would have previously thought impossible. As well as challenging scientists and medical professionals to address urgent value conflicts in the short term, COVID-19 has raised slower-burning value questions for corporations, public institutions, governments, and policymakers.
